ID KO'd

Victors hail US evolution ruling

"the fact that a scientific theory cannot yet render an explanation on every point should not be used as a pretext to thrust an untestable alternative hypothesis grounded in religion into the science classroom...it is ironic that [the members of the Dover school board], who so staunchly and proudly touted their religious convictions in public, would time and again lie to cover their tracks and disguise the real purpose behind the ID Policy...The breathtaking inanity of the Board's decision is evident when considered against the factual backdrop which has now been fully revealed through this trial...
To preserve the separation of church and state mandated by the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution... we will enter an order permanently enjoining Defendants from maintaining the ID Policy..., from requiring teachers to denigrate or disparage the scientific theory of evolution, and from requiring teachers to refer to a religious, alternative theory known as ID."

Which makes it all the more unfortunate that at the time Poade was sat in the Viceroy Curry House in Wolverhampton, head in hands, muttering "I'm tired. I want to go home".

We spent our John Peel Day at the Baker's Vault evening hosted by Darren Poyzer ('Admission free + free chip butties'). Highlight was Anarchy in the UK on a concertina, from a TMBG / Eels type duo.

I couldn't tell where Poade was, despite all his phone calls, but he seemed to be listening to some popular beat combos too.

Zoe and Scott's Birthdays

So it was arranged we were getting a 10am train on Saturday morning for the one and only train going to Nantwich that day. Well, after the drinking onslaught we'd subjected ourselves to for George's birthday the night before, that was never going to happen. Me n Zoe don't remember anything after Gaia. Don't know where we went, don't know what we did, but we weren't well on Saturday morning. So a slow start to the day was necessary, and we eventually dragged ourselves to Stockport station at 12:45 where we randomly meet a couple of party people. Bugger, it's a replacement bus. Double bugger, there's no driver. The rail guys did eventually procure a driver, I can only presume by kidnapping him, as he was from London and this was his 2nd day on the job. He didn't know the way to either Wilmslow, Sandbach or Crewe. Having transferred all the Wilmslow passsengers to a different bus he only had to worry about Sandbach and Crewe, and us four were his only passengers. So we navigated whilst he drove. Had to stop the bus a couple of times to get directions, but we got there and made it to Nantwich Beer festiival by two, five hours late, a fact few seem content to let us forget.

From what I can make out from my scribbles on the programme, I sampled:
  1. Raven Ale, Orkney
  2. Audley Gold, Townhouse
  3. Ode2Joy, Station House
  4. 45, Northern
  5. Gold, Williams
  6. ?
  7. Auld Humdinger, Houston

whilst Zoe sampled:
  1. Town Crier, Hobsons
  2. Eastgate Ale, Weetwood
  3. Fraoch, Heather Ales
  4. Scorpio Porter, Hanby
  5. Goldings, Leatherbritches
  6. ?
  7. Thrappledouser, Inveralmond

We did step out to try and find the food festival, but being late, lazy, hung over / re-drunk and also being so easily distracted by the glittering delights of Nantwich's charity shops (£3.75 for a pair of roller blades), we didn't make it, so carried on drinking instead, whilst Grommett the Balloon Wyzzyrd sculpts hats for the birthday duo.

Getting back was almost more difficult than getting there. We (about 20 of us, all drunk, loud but friendly) piled onto a regular bus from Nantwich to Crewe, arriving in Crewe at exactly the same time our train to Manchester would leave. All efforts to make the driver not stop at any stops inbetween were unsuccessful. Cue an absurdly futile attempt at running hell for leather across Crewe to catch a train we knew had already left. The people of Crewe were deservedly confused by seeing such an array of dreadlocks and balloon hats racing across the little town. Now we have to go via Stoke, ho hum. get back at 10, arrive at the Contact by 11.

MANY DIFFERENT SOUNDS was a stupendous eveing of bands, soundsystems and dancing, all in aid of charity. Everyone had a fucking brilliant time, our highlights being Without A Reason (thanks for the CD guys), the cool looking t-shirts we didn't buy from kitnkabu, and whoever finished the night up in Space 2 were fucking, fucking brilliant.

After all that, Zoe's birthday has been slightly anticlimactic. A quiet day of presents, chilling and pool playing.

George's Birthday

I'm meant to be in Nantwich now you know. But we not well. Oooohhh. Anyway, we don't know where we went afterGaia last night, but I apparently stole two coats from it. If you were in a venue on Canal Street last night and you lost either a denim jacket, or a cream cord jacket with fleece lining and a pot of VO5 styling clay in the pocket, they're round at my flat. Sorry.

Sidmouth

Last weekend myself, Poade and Maddy buggered off to Sidmouth for a couple of night's camping.

Ladram Bay near Sidmouth

We stayed at Ladram Bay which had all the facilities we needed, although a hefty old walk to Sidmouth itself up and over a big bit of headland. We ate at the fantastic Neil's Restaurant where I, forgoing 5 years of vegetarianism, had my first and last taste of Lobster. I always said I'd never deny myself an experience, and Poade said this was the best he'd ever had, so... The weekend was polished off with golf and Tea and Scones at The Cosy Teapot. Which was spiffing.

The bins are a little more solitary

we make money not art: Bins and Benches
The benches love to be sat on, and they often take up position in new spaces to make themselves more attractive to potential human sitters. Sometimes, when it rains, they move themselves to drier, shadier areas of the square. To attract potential human sitting folk, they like to form patterns - the benches moving in to shapes in the centre of the piazza.

The bins are a little more solitary. When the mood takes them, the furniture like to burst in to song. Sometimes, small clusters gather together and sing a tight six-part harmony, and occasionally, though much more rarely due to their shyness, the bins join in with their sweet soprano voices.

Each bench drifts slowly around the square and is equipped with sensors that detect the presence of objects in its immediate vicinity, coming to a complete halt when any object is coming close.

not a neighbour, not even on the same block

666 might not be the number of the beast... "A fragment from the oldest surviving copy of the New Testament, dating to the Third century, gives the more mundane 616 as the mark of the Antichrist".

Though of course, like EVERY prognostication in history, it has more to do with the situation at the time it was written than the abstract interpretations given since...

"...scholars now believe the number in question has very little to do the devil. It was actually a complicated numerical riddle in Greek, meant to represent someone's name.

'It's a number puzzle -- the majority opinion seems to be that it refers to [the Roman emperor] Nero.'

Revelation was actually a thinly disguised political tract, with the names of those being criticized changed to numbers to protect the authors and early Christians from reprisals. 'It's a very political document,' Dr. Aitken said. 'It's a critique of the politics and society of the Roman empire, but it's written in coded language and riddles.'"

Polar Bears and Moai

Dreadfully generic photos of Zoe and Alan doing the tourist thing in London. No Andy, we did not have time to visit you. Not a party trip this one, but enough time to buy a 3 day travelcard as soon as we arrived on the Monday then walk from Hyde Park to Westminster to Leicester Square and see everything inbetween in a single sunny afternoon.
The second day brought enough time to buy many comic book items from Gosh!, visit the British Museum (getting to see the Rosetta Stone made Alan a happy bunny) and have dinner at the Bombay Brasserie (five yards from our hotel, the Millennium Gloucester (4 star means something slightly more luxurious than it did in Amsterdam I can assure you)). We recommend the Palak Pakodi Chaat and the Bhindi Jaipuri.
Our final full day was spent entirely in the National Theatre, watching His Dark Materials from 2 in the afternoon till 10.15. Superb entertainment it has to be said.

Amsterdam

Photos of deadmanjones and Zoe's trip to Amsterdam are now available; they're not of the highest artistic value, and are generally of the clog/windmill/coffeeshop tourist quality, so I can't guarantee it's worth your bandwidth to go take a look.

For what it's worth, here's some lists of what we did do, preceded by an explanation of the everyday machinations that made such activities possible.
We stayed at the Port van Cleve. It's 4 star, but star rating in Amsterdam does not guarantee you a sizable room nor a significant thickness of wall. Whilst the hotel was well located and we were well provided for, you may consider the extra expense over a hostel not worth the effort. A bike is well worth hiring if you plan to journey the city and beyond. Otherwise, both bikes and public transport are needless accessories for a compact and easily navigable city. Amsterdam is not the Venice of the north; there may be a lot of canals, but they are not the principal thoroughfares and are not the best landmarks to navigate by. We navigated the city using the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide and the Coffee Shop Guide. We rented bikes from the first place we found off Dam Square - Damstraat Rent-a-bike, for 35 euros for the week. As far as eating goes there are plenty of varied cuisines to choose from, though breakfast can be a trial if you don't want to gorge on pancakes or ham and eggs. If you like fallafel you're in luck cos it's the Amsterdam equivalent of chip shops. We went to Green Planet twice because of the friendly service and eco-vege menu. Lieve was an experience from the moment we opened the door. Before you see a menu you're asked to select an ambience to eat in; gastranomic, Belgian baroque or traditional. The website gives more details, but check the photos for the selection card we were given and the fab decor of the place. We're not sure if it was something they put in the wine, but we decided we were given some of the best food we've ever eaten, in particular the intense chocolate dessert which more or less induced orgasm. Well recommended.

what we did do
All the coffeeshops we visited listed vaguely in order of merit (created with the assitance of the Coffee Shop Guide (the best guide to Amsterdam regardless of drug philosophy and usually available to buy in the very first coffeeshop you pass over the threshold of))...
  1. Abraxas
  2. Rokerij
  3. Dampkring
  4. Barney's
  5. Greenhouse
  6. Bluebird
  7. Pink Floyd
  8. The Doors
  9. Jolly Joker
  10. the bushdocter

...thought frankly we generally only visted the best, so the tail end of the list doesn't represent places we hated.

Places to go and things to do because we did and we liked (1) obvious: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, Zaanse Schans, Anne Frank Huis, Vondelpark...

Places to go and things to do because we did and we liked (2) less obvious: Amsterdam Bos, Tuschinski Theatre, Sauna Deco, IJ micro-brewery (Brouwerij 't IJ)...

Places we ate: Green Planet, Lieve

Places we drank: IJ micro-brewery (Brouwerij 't IJ),de barderij, Soho, Casablanca, Cafe Schiller

Places we danced: Back 2 Back xtra large at Kingdom in Marcanti Plaza.

Places we shopped: Henk

Things people frequently do but we didn't for one reason or another: See a live sex show, try a vaporiser, visit the erotic museum, visit the hemp museum, heineken museum, royal palace, any of the churches, ride a tram...

Questions we did not find the answer to: why is Betty Boop everywhere, why are there so many shops specialising in light fittings.

Things you should never do in Amsterdam: walk on a cycle lane, try to pronounce Van Gogh the same way Dutch people pronounce it.

29th Birthday

Last night saw me and the missus indulging in a Japanese Evening on the eve of my 29th Birthday.

This involved using the ingredients provided by Japanese Kitchen to make sushi and tempura veg. Easy peasy, if messy (the tempura bit anyway). Everything was delicious, apart from the red cabbage roll where Zoe went mad with the Wasabi. All washed down with warm saki and followed up with Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex Volume 2. Given our propensity for all things anime, the DVD watching didn't exactly mark the evening as unique, but everything else was a first.
Tonight we go see a covers band called Beaver at Stockport's Baker's Vaults with my brothers. Because, frankly, Chemical Brothers were sold out.

'Dave' made fun of this before I managed to, but John Galliano's "sweatshirt and down vest layered over loose trousers, with a chunky knit cap", as featured in the New York Times, is a sight to behold. I first read this story on my phone, where the graphic used was a jocular line of gnomes. On the BBC website however they're evidently doing their best to make it sound serious - but really you know the apostrophes should be around 'threat' in their headline and not 'returns'...

You're still using DVD's? Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!

In my opinion VHS died when one of the mainstream home appliance shops decided to stop selling recorders.

It seems that DVD's end might already be in sight with the introduction of Blu-ray. It can store upto 27GB (54 GB double-layer) compared with the measly 4.7GB stored in a standard DVD. That's 13 hours of starndard video or 4.5 hours of high-definition video, which seems to be the main reason for launching it in the first place.

p.s. why do they always launch a novelty size player with any new format?

Bible Porn

"Bible porn continued. In place of the official CHIC lesson every night, I read to my campers about how Lot's daughters got him drunk and had sex with him, the sexual purity laws from Leviticus, how Noah got drunk and naked and his sons had to cover him up, and the place in Song of Songs where it talks about breasts."

A funny tale from Erik Hanson, who discovered that indoctinating against indoctrination is indoctrination. Many more intersting bits and bobs over at Killing the Buddha, the religious magazine for the irreligious.
